How to choose?
There are many ways to go when looking to get a website online, launch your business, find clients, etc. It can be intimidating.
The first question I ask is, “How much time are you willing to dedicate to your website and marketing?” It is possible these days to create your own website with wix or wordpress for example. These are great options IF 1) You have free time to commit to this 2) You have some basic digital skills 3) You do not need a very personalized brand identity. You must stick to the templates if you go this route! No matter how much good taste you have, you do not have 20 years of experience to know the pitfalls and errors, to be as skilled as an experienced designer. Once into the process, non professionals tend to get design buzz. So many choices of images, colors and layouts, one loses perspective and can lose site of the big picture, the overall look. One canbe dazzled when they manage to place a great image they found and be blinded to the fact that it does not go with the template or colors or theme of the site. Non professional sites will generally always look non-professional. Wix and WordPress have done wonders and made huge advances to make the websites more and more attractive without design or web skills. HOWEVER, I have seen time and time again, people destroy bit by bit the lovely template they started with. Once you start adding your own images, logo, colors, fonts, the professional clean look falls apart.
To wix or not to wix.
Wix is a great option. Once you are up and running it is less time consuming for a basic brochure site (no e-commerce or advanced functions) than trying to manage it on your own. However it will in the end be very expensive. The add-on costs build up pretty quickly. Be careful of the introductory rates that change after your first year. They know once your site is built with them, you will not want to leave. So like the old tactic of drug dealers to give out free samples these providers get you onboard with attractive low low prices but once you have put all the time and effort into making the site they know you are stuck. Read carefully the pricing terms!
More importantly, you will be paying monthly cost on average of 35€ In one year that is 420-600 per year. You can now find a freelancer to make your site tailored to you and no work for you for an average of 1000€ after that initial cost, your monthly hosting fee can be as low as 5€ per month. Once your site is up the cost will be much lower over the years. Unless you are in a high fashion trend setting field, you do not need to redo your site every year! Your site should stand-up for atleast 5 years. A self hosted site created by a professional will thus over 5 years cost you 1300 where as the wix option minimum of 2100 and that is without the add-ons.
What about additional cost of a professional for updates. Most reputable freelancers now offer sites using a page builder that allows you to have an interface similar to wix for adding content easily on your own. With a professional, you control the budget. If you aren’t getting the results you want, the professional can step in and if they are good, your income from their help will more than pay for the service.
Where to put your money. Caveats for working with a professional freelancer or agency. choose wisely where to put your money. Be efficient. Time is money when you are paying by the hour. Don’t spend too much time on choosing different versions and images and redoing pages over and over. Save your money for the most impact- marketing. The “prettier picture” will not bring you more clients! It may help you be chosen over a competitor in the end but it won’t get you found to even be in the running. Sometimes you have to step back and see that branding is important but not the end in itself. It is the means and only one of the means! Trust your professional! If you like the work they have done previously and have clearly given your design preferences- trust them! don’t obsess over your idea of how you want to be pereived. Every visitor of your site is going to have their own perception anyway.
What about the freelancers in India, Africa and Russia? I won’t lie, I have used these services myself. The cost is very tempting. Bu the old adage applies.. you get what you pay for. This is not to say they may not be very talented but there are several pitfalls to face:

– email back and forths and the time difference

You just can’t beat it! What started off as a simple page builder for simple blogs has grown into the largest most used content management system (CMS) in the world

As great as wordpress is. Few find it very user friendly out of the box. Their interface is … simple but not intuitive and does not allow for the drag and drop page creation similar to wix.
Here too solutions have been developed to make our lives easier. The Page Builders. Like WordPress, there is a lot of competition and everyone picks their favorite.
I have purchased and installed for all my clients, Elementor.
Jet Engine
For more advanced sites with “dynamic” content this is an amazing new option for wordpress users. To put it simply, if you can dream it, Jet makes it possible.
Canva
Sorry Photoshop but the competition has finally arrived. For the average user, you no longer need the pricey and difficult to use Adobe programs. I have purchased the pro version of canva allowing me tcollaborate with clients in real time on all graphics, images and parts of websites and social media. We can even work together on social media videos in canva. Its so easy to use even my lowest-tech clients manage. I set up your brand kit on canva so that when you need to create anything in the future for your site you don’t even need my help. You will have templates and color guidelines right there for you. I can also easily see your work and give feedback at anytime. I am here to support my clients not make you dependent on me.
Love it or hate it, for now, Google is a necessity. Unfortunately the tools provided by Google are not yet user friendly for the average user. I get all my clients set-up on Google to make use of all the tools available needed to analyse results, get positioned well on Google, make additional revenue with adsense, etc.
